Round-Up: Lizzie Lee Runs Personal Best in Raheny (with results)

FullSizeRender 2A record entry, perfect weather and cracking races upfront – the 31st Raheny 5  will prove hard to beat in years to come.

Upfront, Leevale’s Lizzie Lee not only won the women’s race in 26 mins 34 secs, but knocked 59 seconds off her previous best for the distance. Anne Marie McGlynn of Letterkenny was over 40 seconds behind for second place in 27 mins 13 secs, while third was Orla Drumm of Crusaders in 27 mins 26 secs. Fourth and first over 45 was Catherina McKiernan in 27 mins 42 secs, while fifth was Leevale’s Michelle Finn.  Leevale with its three finishers in the top ten proved best of the teams.

In the men’s race Mick Clohisey was hoping to make it a home victory for Raheny Shamrock but  could not quite catch Martin Fagan of Mullingar, who has produced a string of good results on the roads since returning from a two-year ban for doping last year. His winning time was 23 mins 36 secs, with Clohisey second in 23: 44. Raheny’s Conor Dooney finished third in 24:11, followed by Scott Rankin, one of a large contingent that had travelled for the race from the North, and Sean Hehir of Rathfarnham. Letterkenny’s Ciaran Doherty was first M40 and Mick Traynor was first over 50. Raheny won both the senior and master team categories.

JOHN TRAVERS of Donore  clocked his  second sub-four minute mile in a year with a great victory in 3:59.62 at the New Balance Games in New York.  Travers’ time was inside the 1500m qualifying time for the European Indoors. However, it would appear that he will not now run the opening leg for the Irish team at the New Balance Indoor Games medley relay next Saturday. On the team are Mark English, Ciarain O Lionaird, and Brian Gregan.FullSizeRender 10

HIGHLIGHT of the Glo Health Junior/U23 Indoor Championships in Athlone was a junior men’s 60m hurdles record of 7.89 for Sam Healy of Leevale.

In the junior 60m, Sean O’Driscoll from Raheny Shamrock AC produced the upset of the day when he beat  Sligo’s Zac Irwin, with both athletes timed at 6.90 secs. On a bad day for Irwin, Donore’s Sean Lawlor beat him for the 200m title with a personal best time of 21.86 . Trim’s Harry Purcell won the 800m in 2:01.59.

Good U23 performances came from Marcus Lawler  of St Laurence O’Toole’s winner of both the U23 60m and 200m; from Sarah Lavin of UCD winner of the women’s 60m hurdles in 8.67secs, Phil Healy who won the 200m in 24.31 secs and also the  open 60m after false starting in the championship race earlier.  UCD’s Karl Griffin won the 800m in 1:51.18, while Katie Kirk of Queen’s who has recently declared for Ireland, took the women’s 800m in 2:08.19 from Aislinn Crossey of UCD.  In the field, Mid-Sutton’s Sarah McCarthy won the long jump with a personal best 6.07m, while John Kelly of Finn Valley had over 5 metres to spare when he won the shot putt with 17.65m.

* Maria McCambridge and Danny Mooney won invitational 1500m races held during the junior and U23 indoors.

CONGRATS to Sergiu Ciobanu Clonliffe Harriers who became an official Irish citizen last week – and we’re pretty sure now knows more about this country than most of us!
