Round-up: Lawler celebrates 21st with 200m record. White throws 50.83m in Zurich

20248293840_b61159dcc4_z (1)Carlow’s Marcus Lawler celebrated his 21st birthday by winning the 200m with a new stadium record of 20.96 secs at the Glo Health National Indoor Championships in Athlone.

Lawler had warmed up for the 200m by finishing a fighting fifth in the 60m won by Shercock’s Craig Lynch in 6.81; Lawler ran 6.92 secs.

Dominating the women’s sprints was Phil Healy of Bandon who won the 60m in 7.47 secs and the 200m in 23.75 secs.

In the men’s shot putt, Paul Quirke’s 25-year old record finally tumbled when Galway’s Sean Breathnach powered the shot out to to 18.16m in the fourth round, adding 9cm to Quirke’s 1991 mark. Breathnach, using the rotational technique,  opened his sequence with 16.16m, fouled in the second round and then got out to 17.67 in the third – a decent warm-up for his record breaking effort in the fourth round. He threw 18.13m in the fifth round and then fouled on his final effort.

Just off the qualification time for next month’s World Indoors was hurdler Ben Reynolds of North Down. His personal best of 7.73 secs for victory in the 60m hurdles  was just one hundredth of a second off the qualifying standard. He hopes to make the time before the March 7 cut-off and runs in the Czech Republic next Saturday. Sarah Lavin of UCD won the women’s 60m hurdles in 8.27 secs.

Making it a UCD double in the 800m races were Ciara Mageean and Mark English. Mageean won the women’s race in 2:03.76 from Riocht’s Laura Crowe. In the men’s race, English ran an untroubled 1:51:57 – slower than his heat time of 1:48.15 – and is aiming to run the World Indoors in Portland, Oregon next month.

Over 400m, DSD’s Sinead Denny showed that she is right back in form when she ran a time of 53.57 secs to beat Jenna Bromell of Emerald and the defending champion Christine McMahon of Ballymena. In the men’s 400m, Richard Morrissey of Crusaders just held off the fast finishing Andrew Mellon of North Down to win in 47.51 secs.

Kilkenny City Harriers’ Eoin Everard had a productive day, winning the 3,000m in 8 mins13.63 secs and then returning to the track less than an hour later to take the 1500m title in 4:01.17.

ROBERT HEFFERNAN won the 5000m walk at the French Indoor Championships in 19:40.21. Second  was France’s  Jean Blancheteau in 19:45.22.
