Round-Up: Fagan and Connolly win Bewley’s Trim ’10’; Everard, Mooney Qualify. Euro Clubs.

Martin Fagan of Mullingar won the inaugural Bewley’s 10-Mile in Trim this morning. Fagan’s time of 48 mins 23 secs put him almost three minutes ahead of Clonliffe’s Gary O’Hanlon, with Tudor Moldovan, also Clonliffe third. Breege Connolly of North Belfast Harriers was first woman in a personal best time of 57 mins 31 secs, with Tullamore’s Pauline Curley second and first W45 in 59 mins 4 secs, although like O’Hanlon, she didn’t register as a master. Next up for Fagan, who returned from a doping ban less than a year ago, is the Rotterdam Marathon.

IN DUNGARVAN, Raheny’s Mick Clohisey won the John Treacy Dungarvan 10 mile in a record time of  48 mins 45 secs – just seven seconds clear of Leevale’s Mark Hanrahan, who was also inside the old record as was third placed Sean Hehir. For the fourth time, Siobhan O’Doherty of Borrisokane was  the women’s winner in a time of 58 mins oo secs exactly. No sign of Mary Cullen in the results, so we take it she didn’t show up.

AT THE ARMORY INVITATIONAL Indoor meet in New York, the Irish team finished second in the medley relay , won by an American quartet in a world record time of 9 mins 19 .93 secs. Ireland finished  less than six seconds behind in 9:25.37, a time that was also inside the world record. Splits for the Irish were  Declan Murray 2:53.17 for 1200m, Brian Gregan 47.40 secs for 400m, Mark English 1:46.59 for 800m and 3:58.23 for Ciaran O Lionaird in the 16000m. English’s 800m split was the fastest of the day.

EUROPEAN INDOOR qualification marks for  UCD’s Ciara Everard and Danny Mooney of Letterkenny were the highlight of the Athletics Ireland Indoor Games in Athlone.  Everard clocked a time of 2:03.50  when winning the 800m comfortably from Dutch visitor Suzanne Voorrips  who finished in 2:09.06.  A close third was Aislinn Crossey  of UCD in 2:09.76. Mooney  ran a personal best 3:42.69 to win the 1500m; the qualification mark is 3:43.00.  Donore’s John Travers  and Sarah Treacy of Dunboyne won the 3000m races in 8:19.30 and 9:12.22 respectively.

MARIA McCAMBRIDGE  11th in the women’s race  was the best individual performance from the four DSD teams in action at the European Clubs Cross-Country in Guadalajara. The junior women, led by Sophie Murphy, finished fourth; the junior men and the senior women eighth and the senior men 14th. The junior men, led by Patrick Mac Gabhann,  were only 13 points off  fourth.
