At the Glo Health National Indoors in Athlone, Dara Kerwick of Clonliffe won the 400m in 46. 53 secs – an improvement on the time of 46.80 secs he had run in the heats and comfortably inside the European Indoors qualification mark of 47.20 secs. Timmy Crowe of Leevale was bumped out of the race, with Paul Murphy of Ferrybank finishing second and Harry Purcell from Trim third. In the long jump, Adam McMullen’s mark of 7.80 was bang on the European qualification mark, while Sam Healy’s 7.53m for second was a national junior record.
Kerry O’Flaherty of Newcastle won the race of her life to win the women’s 1500m in 4:16.49 – not too far off the European Indoor qualification of 4:14. A distant second was Riocht’s Laura Crowe in 4:22.38, with Claire Tarplee of DSD third in 4:23.07. UCD’s Ciara Mageean was forced to drop out of the championships after and won’t run at the European Indoors after picking up a plantar fasciitis injury.
Donore’s John Travers won the men’s 1500m in 3:49.93, beating Kilkenny’s Eoin Everard, who finished in 3:51.90. In the women’s 400m, Christine McMahon of Ballymena, better known as a hurdler, was the winner of a closely fought race in 55.06 secs. Emerald’s Jenna Bromell was second and Sinead Denny of DSD third.
In the 60m finals, Kelly Proper of Ferrybank won the women’s title in 7.38 secs, with Emerald’s Ciara Neille second in 7.46 secs, and Catherine
McManus of DCH pipping Phil Healy of Bandon for bronze in 7.50. It was a brilliant weekend for Proper who later annexed the 200m title in a stadium record time of 23.27 secs for her 19th national title. Keith Pike of Clonliffe won the men’s race in 6.86, with Marcus Lawler second in 6.90 secs and and Zak Irwin third in 6.92 secs. Lwler went on to win the 200m in 21.08 secs – a stadium record. Despite clipping the final hurdle, Ger O’Donnell of Carrick-on-Shannon won the men’s 60m hurdles in 8.32 secs.
Fresh from his 1 min 47.17 secs run in Birmingham a day earlier, Mark English of UCD won the 800m in 1:51.34, with Declan Murray of Clonliffe second in 1:51.53. English’s Birmingham time was inside the European Indoors standards of 1:48.50. Winning the women’s 800m was Ciara Everard in 2:06.63. Her UCD team mate Aislinn Crossey was second in 2:09.39.

SARAH TREACY of Dunboyne clocked a time of 9:08.40 to finish ninth in the 3000m at the Birmingham Grand Prix, where Claire Tarplee of DSD finished eighth in the mile in 4:37.39. Both athletes were chasing European Indoor qualification times.
FIONNUALA BRITTON finished thirdoverall in the Wicklow Hospice Half Marathon held at Avondale Rathdrum. Britton finished in 82 mins 36 secs – less than three minutes behind race winner Mick Byrne of Sli Cualann. Neil Witorski and Deirdre Byrne won the 10km race.
KIM HICKEY of Donore won the fourth and final race in this year’s Meet & Train Cross-Country League in Firhouse – a series that grew out of the early days of the Women’s Mini Marathon when few such races were open to women. Great to see record numbers this year from groups and clubs in Meath and Kildare as well as from Dublin.
