Round-up: Clare McCarthy wins Swansea ‘Half’. Plus league action and IMC Belfast

Leevale’s Clare McCarthy won today’s Swansea Half Marathon in Wales, with her time of 74 mins 34 secs a mere four seconds off the course record.

Mick Clohisey of Raheny clocked a time of 65 mins 33 secs to finish second overall, followed by Sean Hehir of Rathfarnham third with 66.36.

On a long day of athletics in Tallaght for the opening round of the National Track and Field League, Kelly Neely of Lisburn proved that she is back to fitness when she won the division 1 800m.  Race of the day was the men’s 5000m, where Eoin Strutt of Raheny caught DSD’s Rob Corbally on the line for victory.

John Kelly of Finn Valley proved the class of the men’s shot, winning with his opening throw. Winning the high jump was James Pender of St Abban’s back competing after a long period of injury.

In the men’s steeplechase, Freddy Sittuk, who had finished third in the Dunshaughlin 10km the night before,  came home first for Raheny. In second place was Eoin McCullough of Clonliffe Harriers, who competes at the World Orienteering Championships next week. When it came to the points, it was business as usual for the DSD women and Clonliffe men who finished top of the table.

JASON SMYTH Derry City won the 100m in 10.70 secs at the Belfast IMC International at Mary Peters Track yesterday. In other good results, Sarah Healy of Blackrock, who has already qualified for the World Juniors, ran a personal best  4:20.84 to win the 1500m. Amy O’Donoghue of Emerald won the 800m in 2:06.32. In an exciting men’s 400m, Brandon Array of Blarney Inniscarra came home first in 47.57 beating Harry Purcell  of Trim AC, who ran 47.71,  and Craig Newell  of Ballymena and Antrim third in 47.92.

AT THE BMC  meet in Watford, Kevin Kelly of St Coca’s ran 3:43.54 in the 1500m (Euro U23 qualifier) , while Leevale’s Charlie O’Donovan’s time of 3:48.67 qualifies him for the European U20s. Raheny’s Eoin Strutt  clocked a PB 3:51.39.

In the 3000m, 17-year-old Darragh McElhinney of Bantry AC ran a time of 8:20.89 – just off his personal best of 8:18. 88 run earlier this season. McElhinney has a 1500m Euro U20  qualifying mark. Also notching up qualifying times were  Amy Rose Farrell of Blackrock with a PB 9:35.94 in the 3000m; and Nadia Power of Templeogue 4:25.09 and Emma O’Brien of Sli Cualann 4:25.95 in the B 1500m race which was won by  Mary Ann O’Sullivan of St Abban’s in 4:22.10.
