Claire Gibbons McCarthy finished fifth overall and first woman in 75 mins 10 secs at the Boston Scientific Clonmel Half Marathon yesterday. .McCarthy was one of the elite few whose target this year was Olympic qualification and she is on target now for a fast autumn marathon. Winner of the race was John O’Connell of Leevale in 71 mins 18 secs, with the Cork club taking four of the top five places.

At the Inadaver 10k in Duleek, Brian McCluskey of North East Runners was a comfortable winner in 32 mins 38 secs. Visitor Sonia Ruiz Andrade was first woman in 38 mins 11 secs. Myles Gibbons of SBR and Aisling Kirwan of host club Parnell were the winners of the Rathdrum 4-Mile.
Last Wednesday, Freddy Sittuk – three days after running the steeplechase and the 5000m at the National League final – just held off the challenge of Conor Duffy from Glaslough to win the Castlepollard 5km in 14 mins 41 secs. With Simon Ryan third and Cillian O’Leary, Raheny took the team prize, ahead of Portlaoise and Mullingar with fourteen teams entered. Charlotte Kearney of Donadea Runners was first woman in 17.33, with second placed Sorcha Nic Dhomhnaill leading Donore to team victory.
