Round-Up: Christie, Durkan win at Rathfarnham; Lee and Ganiel Sub-2:40 in Berlin

LIN_2985Mark Christie of Mullingar Harriers was a comfortable winner of the Rathfarnham 5km, pushing the pace from the start and winning in 14 mins 37 seconds. Just three seconds adrift was Brian Maher of KCH. In the battle for third place, Conor Dooney of Raheny outsprinted Dunshaughlin’s Robbie Matthews and Tom Fitzpatrick of Tallaght, who was running  his first race  since undergoing surgery earlier this year.

Ciara Durkan from Skerries was a clear winner of the women’s race in 16 mins 34 secs. Raheny veteran Annette Kealy was second, following by her Raheny clubmate Maria O’Sullivan and Ilona McElroy of Crusaders.

* Lizzie Lee of Leevale finished 9th woman at the Berlin Marathon in 2: 38.09 – a personal best by eight minutes. Gladys Ganiel of North Belfast Harriers was 13th in 2: 39.36 (inside Commonwealth Games qualification mark), while Thomas Frazier clocked 2:17.45 and Philip Harty 2:21.53 in the men’s race.

* Maria McCambridge clocked a time of 2 hrs 1 min 15 secs at the Eco 2 Run 20 Mile race held on a 5-mile loop around Eastpoint Business Park in Dublin’s Docklands – roughly equivalent to a 2:41 marathon. McCambridge started with 31 mins 9 secs for her first 5-mle loop and then clocked splits of 29:56, 30:05 and 30:02. First home in 1:55.52 was Bernard Roe with his Raheny clubmate Simon Reede less than a minute behind in 1:56.41. With 5 mile and 10 mile options (and a few opting to do 15 miles, ie three laps), this ingenious idea isn’t so much a race as a time trial – and everyone seems to have had a good time and achieved their objectives.

* Annadale’s Paddy Hamilton won the revived Ferns Half Marathon in 69 mins 48 secs. Tom Hogan of host club SBR was second and Raheny’s Simon Ryan third. Jackie Carthy of Kilmore was first woman.

* Gary Thornton won the Loughrea Grey Lake 10km today, with British Olympic marathon runner Freya (Murray) Ross finishing fourth overall and first woman in 34mins 36 secs.

* Dublin Women’s Mini Marathon winner Siobhan O’Doherty led home close to 900 finishers at the Tipperary Women’s Mini Marathon 10km in Clonmel.  Her time of 35 mins 17 put her almost three minutes clear of the chasers led by local athlete Angela McCann. In third place was Teresa Agar, 2nd in the Moone Kilomarathon a day earlier.

*Raheny’s Brian Leahy was a clear winner of  Saturday’s Moone Kilomarathon in 90 minutes 57 seconds. Just over two minutes behind in second place was Brian Kirwan, with Brian Murphy third. Making it  a Dublin double was Donore’s Anne Curley winner of the women’s race, with sister Florence third and Teresa Agar splitting the pair.

* Irish marathon champion Paul Pollock of Annadale Striders led home an entry of close to 900 at the Bangor 10km. Pollock finished in an untroubled time of 30  mins 45 secs. First woman was Dromore’s Julie Turley  in 36 mins 40 secs. A day later, Pollock won the Redcar Half Marathon in England, clocking a time of 67 mins 25 secs.

* Gary O’Hanlon won the 10km at the Elvery’s Galway Bay Running Festival and then after a short rest,  helped the Clonliffe team  to victory (and a €1,000 cheque) in the half marathon. Sergiu Ciobanu was a clear winner of the race, with O’Hanlon 4th. Pauline Curley was first woman in the “half”. Sarah Mulligan of DSD was third overall and first woman in the 10km.

* A day later, Gary O’Hanlon did another double – he started by winning the 10km race with sister Karen first woman at the Jog for Jockeys fundraiser in the Curragh. An hour later, the pair were part of the  winning team in the 5km, won by juvenile athlete  Jack O’Leary with O’Hanlon second.

* Mick Traynor and Aoife Talty made it a Raheny Shamrock double at the inaugural St Anne’s Parkrun, with 233 finishers. Traynor’s time of 15.49 was an age-related Irish Parkrun record, while Talty’s 16.51 was an Irish women’s Parkrun record. Over one thousand men and women of all ages and levels of fitness ran a Parkrun in the Republic this weekend.
