Round-Up: Christie 29.20 and Britton 32.56 at Great Manchester 10k

IMG_2953Fionnuala Britton of Kilcoole clocked a time of 32 mins 56 secs to finish seventh of the elite women at the Great Manchester 10km. Behind her Letterkenny’s Ann Marie McGlynn was 16th in 34 mins 52 secs. Kenyan athlete Betsy Saine was the winner in 31 mins 49 secs, with England’s Gemma Steel a close second in 31 mins 55 secs.

In the men’s elite race, Mark Christie of Mullingar finished in 29 mins 20 secs – enough for 10th place. Finishing in a personal best  of 29 mins 54 secs was Kevin Seaward of St Malachy’s, 15th and one place ahead of Haile Gebrselassie who ran 30 mins 5 secs. Winner was Stephen Sambu of Kenya in 27 mins 30 secs.

IN THE USA, Brian Murphy of Crusaders finished second in the 400m at the Big East meet in Villanova with a time of 47.91 secs. In the 800m, Christopher O’Sullivan clocked a time of 1:51.59, while Shane Quinn was second in the 10,000m in 30:05.52. Siofra Cleirigh Buttner of DSD was second in the women’s 1500m in 4:21.45 to put her top of the current Irish rankings. At the Oxy meet in Eagle Rock, Declan Murray was fourth in the 800m in 1:48.79. At an Ivy League meet in Philadephia, Raheny’s Kevin Dooney finished fourth in the 10,000m with a time of 29:56.79. Tomas Cotter of Dunleer was in action at the Shocker Open in Wichita where he won the steeplechase in 9:01.71. That puts him second behind Jayme Rossiter of Clonliffe on the current rankings. In the UK, Paul Byrne ran 52.09 secs to win the 400m hurdles at a premier league round in Sheffield.

Here’s a result we missed: former Irish international athlete Marie Davenport, now aged 40, ran a time of 2:49.06 at the Boston Marathon a few weeks ago. Sli Culann’s Stephanie Reilly was also running and finished in 2:55.44. In the London Marathon, Michelle Nolan ran 2:48.59.
