Round-Up: Foster Equals Irish 100m record; Britton’s 32:57 for 10,000m.

Amy Foster of City of Lisburn  finished third in the 100m  in Clermont, Florida with her time of 11.40secs equaling Ailis McSweeney’s Irish record  – and also the qualifying her for the European Championships.

Although she made the qualifying time for the 60m at the World Championships earlier this year, Foster opted not to run, preferring to concentrate her attention on the outdoor season, with Europeans and Commonwealth Games coming up.  She has based herself in Florida, running 11.50 secs twice last month plus a wind-assisted 11.38 secs.

Also in Clermont, Colin Quirke of Crusaders won both the shot with a best of 16.68m and the discus with 55.41. Elsewhere, Tara Jameson of Sli Cualann ran 16:15.51 for 5000m in Charlottesville.

Fionnuala Britton finished fourth in 32 mins 57.49 secs in the women’s race at the Highgate Harriers Night of the 10,000m PBs in London. Maria McCambridge finished seventh in 33:19.43 On a night when the weather threatened to ruin  what had been billed as an endurance carnival, LIN_5373neither troubled the A standard of 32 mins 15 secs.  Best of the Irish men was Galway’s Gary Thornton who finished eighth in 30:02.25.

SARAH COLLINS won  the women’s 10,000m in a time of 33:36.36 at the Big East Championships in Villanova – an Irish junior record.

ROSE ANNE GALLIGAN  ran a time of 2:02 42 to finish 10th in the women’s 800m at the IAAF Diamond League meet in Doha, Qatar.  Winner of the race was Kenya’s Eunice Jepkoech Sum in 1:59.33.  Britain’s Jenny Meadows was fifth in 2:00.91. Galligan’s personal best is 2:00.58 set last July.

A STUNNING FIGURE OF AROUND  80,000 took part in 37 Darkness into Light runs all over the country early on Saturday morning, according to organisers Pieta House. The run, which  was first held in 2009, begins as dawn breaks  and remembers those who have died by suicide. Around 12,000 turned up in Dublin’s Phoenix Park alone. This year’s run will have raised over €1.5m for the charity.
