Roads: Callaghan and Alexander win Dublin “half”

Eoin Callaghan of Star of the Sea and Karen Alexander of  Acorns AC were the winners of the SSE Airtricity Half Marathon in Dublin’s Phoenix Park.  Callaghan’s time of 68 mins 21 secs saw him finish over a minute ahead of Clonliffe’s David Mansfield. The women’s race was closer with Alexander just fourteen seconds clear of Aine O’Reilly. Leading them all home was paralympian Patrick Monahan in a classyIMG_0005 time of 54 mins 8 secs.

There was the worst possible end to the day when news filtered out that a young man had died close to the end of the race. Statement from the race organisers:

“On behalf of the SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon Team, it is with great regret that we must confirm that a 23-year-old male passed away at today’s Dublin Half Marathon in Phoenix Park.

We would like to commend the St John’s Ambulance medical team and all those who looked after the young man and express our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

We ask that the family’s privacy is respected at this time.”

KENYAN visitor Ian Kipono won the Sonia 5km in Cobh, which was honouring Irish athletics legend Sonia O’Sullivan. First woman was Amy Rose Farrel of Dublin club Blackrock;  just behind her for second woman was Sonia’s second daughter, Sophie.
