Roads: Sittuk, Ganiel defy elements at Frank Duffy ’10’

IMG_4625On truly one of the foulest days possible for road running, Freddy Sittuk and Gladys Ganiel ran conservative races to finish first man and woman at the SSE Airtricity Frank Duffy ’10’ in the Phoenix Park.

Of the 6,200 who had registered, fewer than 4,000 turned up and who could blame them? The organisers from the BHAA and Civil Service Harriers had a torrid time ensuring that the start and finish were in place, although, in the case of the finish, the gantry fell over; as did several Portaloos.

Up front, time was of no interest and Sittuk ran along with his Raheny clubmate Mark Kirwan for most of the race, only breaking away for victory with the line in sight.Likewise for Ganiel, who was closely followed by Catherina McKiernan. Scottish visitor Michael Cawley, who had finished second two years ago, was third this time. Bryony Proctor from Bromley was third woman. Pics at www.lindie.zenfolio.com and www.flickr.com/lindie
