Raheny’s Freddy Sittuk had to battle hard for victory in the Michael Fearon/Kevin Marron 5k, organised by Glenmore AC on the Cooley Peninsula just north of Dundalk yesterday evening.
Sittuk finished in 14 mins 45 secs, with Conor Duffy of Glaslough and Slieve Gullion’s Paddy Hamilton clipping his heels. First woman was Catherine O’Conor, who was a clear winner in 18 mins 08 secs. An astonishing 28 men and 24 women’s teams had entered, with North Belfast Harriers finished first and second of the men and Drogheda and District first of the women.
An entirely different sort of the race was this morning’s 5km held as part of the visit to Dublin of the Rock ‘n’ Roll franchise, which is so unashamedly American and commercial in its intent that the race t-shirt is priced in dollars ($26 in case you’re interested). A total of 1,845 were happy to pay up for this race, with Thomas Sherlock the winner in 16 mins 17 secs and Helen Wright first woman in 19 mins 14 secs.
