Round-up: Coghlan, Britton Win St Patrick’s Festival 5km. Gough Double at Masters.

John Coghlan of host club Metro St Brigid’s and Kilcoole’s Fionnuala Britton were the winners ofIMG_4618 the St Patrick’s Festival 5km. Coghlan and Clonliffe’s Mark Kenneally pushed the pace from the start of the race, with Coghlan, taking the lead at about 4km and coming home to win in 14 mins 32 secs. It was a second win for John, grandson of race founder Bill Coghlan; he last won in 2013.  John Frazer  of Crusaders was third with Irish schools champion Kevin Mulcaire fourth and first junior.

In the women’s race, Britton finished 15th overall in  15 mins 52 secs. She was followed home by Letterkenny’s Ann Marie McGlynn in  16.18, with Siobhan O’Doherty third and Orla Drumm fourth. Catherina McKiernan was fifth behind Orla Drumm of Crusaders in 16.49. Not bad for a 45-year-old!

AT THE NATIONAL MASTERS INDOORS in Athlone, M60 800m world record holder Joe Gough  of  West Waterford  added two more titles to his vast collection when he won the 400m in 59.60 secs and the 800m in  2 mins 17.16 secs. Another double winner was Tullamore’s  Pauline  Curley with wins in the W45  800m and 30000m. One of the races of the day was the women’s 800m, where Denise Toner of Cones showed impressive form to beat  Lisburn’s Kelly Neely in  2:16.62 with Neely  timed at 2.16.98. Toner also won the 1,500m. Running the fastest 3000m of the day was Stuart Moloney  of Mooreabley Milers  with a time of 8:50.22. Raheny was having a good day with Damien Martin winning the M45 3000m and Mick Traynor the M50 3000.

In the M35 sprints, Ballymena’s Jonathan Carleton  clocked a tiem of 7.15 secs to beat Kevin Cogley  of Menapians, who had the consolation of winning the 200m in 23.27 secs. DSD’s Shane Sheridan  was an impressive winner of the M55 60m  in 8.05 secs, while   Nenagh’s Pat Naughton and Hugh Gallagher of Milford won M80 and M90 60m titles respectively.   During the championships Pat Naughton was presented with the Tadgh Lynch Awardas Master Athlete of the Year – well deserved after a lifetime of devotion to athletics.

Loughrea’s Mary Barrett  won the W50 shot with 10.44m, while Riocht’s Tomas Griffin nailed down the M40 long jump title with a leap of 5.79m.
