Roads: Clohisey beats Sittuk at Waterside ‘Half’. Murray and Fagan tops at Laganside 10k

Mick Clohisey of Raheny  – who runs the Berlin Marathon in a few weeks time – was an impressive winner of the Waterside Half Marathon in Derry. His time of 65 mins 8 secs put him over two minutes clear of his Raheny clubmate Freddy Keron Sittuk, who clearly had last weekend’s Longford Marathon in his legs.  Local athlete Scott Rankin was third and first over 50. An impressive seventh overall was Pauric McKinney of Inishown, who was also first over 50 and third master overall. Winning the women’s race by nine minutes was Derry’s Catherine Whoriskey in 83 mins 08 secs.

IN BELFAST, Gary Murray of St Malchy’s pushed the pace from the start and was rewarded with victory at the Pure Running Laganside 10km, which incorporated the NI and Ulster Championships.  From halfway, Murray was pushed hard by Slieve Gullion’s Paddy Hamilton and forged ahead to win in 30 mins 34 secs. Finishing third was England-based Stephen Scullion, running his first race for some time.  A closely-fought women’s race was won by Armagh’s Danielle Fagan in 37 mins 4 secs. She pulled away from Gladys Ganiel O’Neill of North Belfast Harriers in the later stage of the race.  A huge number of teams had entered the race – 51 men and 41 women – with North Belfast coming out on top in both categories.

DARRAGH RENNICKS made it a home victory at the Rennicks and Delaney Cups 5-Mile in Bohermeen, Co Meath.  Brothers Peter and Rory Mooney were second and third. First woman was Dunboyne’s Emilia Dan, with her clubmate Claire Ni Fhaircheallaigh second.
