Clonliffe’s Sergiu Ciobanu, who runs the Berlin Marathon at the end of the month, set a new course record of 66 mins 17 secs on his way to victory at the Flatline Athlone Half Marathon. Jane Anne Healy of Athenry was first woman.
Mark English won the 500m in 59.58 secs at the Great North City Games in Tyneside. His UCD clubmate Ciara Mageean was again narrowly outside the 4 mins 6 secs qualification mark for Rio ’16 when she ran 4:06.49 for fifth in the 1500m at Rieti, Italy. The time improved marginally on the 4:06.54 she ran last Tuesday, also in Italy, and is a personal best. Riocht’s Laura Crowe clocked 2:04.68 for 5th in the 800m.
In Lucan at the Tom Byrne 5km, Clonmel’s Kevin Maunsell proved the class of the field winning in 25 mins 16 secs. For Cathy McCourt of North Belfast Harriers, the long journey proved worthwhile when she finished best of the women in 31 mins 28 secs.
PAURIC MCKINNEY of Inishowen set a new Irish M50 5km record when he ran 15 mins 32 secs for second place at the Donegal 5km Championships in Letterkenny. Finn Valley’s Barry Harron won the race in 15.20; Annmarie McGlynn of Letterkenny was a clear winner of the women’s race in 16.40.
RAHENY master Damien Martin was the winner of the BHAA OPW Trail 5km in Trim, where Donna Mahon was first woman. Raheny’s Mark Kirwan won the Kill 10km, where Rathfarnham Olympian Caitriona Jennings was first woman in her first race after a long period of injury.
