Donna Mcloughlin and Ger Copeland

Donna McLoughlin and Ger Copeland

After four lung-busting loops of Howth Hill, the fourth round of the East of Ireland Marathon Series came down to a sprint with race organiser Ger Copeland catching Don Hannon in the last 300m of the race. “I was wearing headphones and I didn’t hear him,” said Don afterwards. Ah!

First woman was Donna McLoughlin with Marie Chapman of Slaney Olympic second. Finishing his 309th marathon was Raheny’s Dave Brady. He completed his 300m marathon on the second day of the 10 marathons in 10 days  series in Sixmilebridge and after today’s race, received a special silver plate to commemorate his exceptional achievement.

Dave started running marathons in 1986. “It took me 21 years to run my first 100 marathons and then I started speeding it up – and that’s the way it should be.”

Brady’s record of running 47 marathons in one year  is under imminent threat from Shane

Dave Brady

McCarville, who was finishing his 44th marathon this year.  “I read an article saying that if you ran more than one marathon, you put your  life in danger,” says the father of two, who is a mature student. “I wanted to prove them wrong and this is my chance while the children are still small.”

He expects to reach his target by the end of the month – last week he ran the Courtmacsharry  Ultra – his 12th marathon in 24 days. He is managing to keep most of his marathons under the four hour mark.

The next East of Ireland Marathon will take place on September 21 in Donadea. Entry fee is just €20, with 50 places on offer. Pics at www.lindienaughton.zenfolio.com
