Lots of good races and records at the opening day of the Aviva Leinster Schools Track and Field Championships in Santry.
It all started with two record-breaking runs – Kate O’Connor of St Vincent’s Dundalk winning the minor girls’ 590 in 1 mins 17 secs and Mark Milner of Colaiste Choilm Tullamore setting out hard from the start of the minor boys’ 800m and rewarded with a record of 2:02.51.
O’Connor went on to set another record in the minor girls’ javelin of 36 metres.
Paddy Maher of Dunshaughlin only shook of the challenge of Darragh Finn from St Declan’s Cabra in the final 200m of the junior boys’ 1500m. Molly Scott win in the inter 80m hurdles was emphatic and she will go in the 100m on Saturday.
Another clear winner was Rob Tully of Gormanston in the senior 2000m steeplechase; he hopes to make it a double in Saturday’s senior 800m. Winning the junior girls’ 1500m in a sprint for the line was Jodie McCann of Rathdown.
