Marcus Lawler of CBS Carlow left the Aviva Leinster Schools Track and Field Championships at Santry with a nice haul of three wins – and three records. His first came in the senior 100m, which he won in a spectacular time of 10.38 – the fastest 100m run on Irish soil in some years and an Irish junior record. It also broke the long-standing Leinster schools record of Derek O’Connor set in 1983- that’s 30 years ago. Next up was the 200m, which Lawler won in 21.17, again breaking a 1983 time set by Derek O’Connor. Finally, came the 4x 100m where Lawler anchored his team to victory in 4.17 for his third record of the day.Siofra Cleirigh Buttner of Colaiste Iosagain stuck to her specialist 800m and pushed the pace from the start. She soon stretched away for the rest of the field and her reward was a new Leinster schools senior record of 2:06.67, improving Gillian Lynch’s 1989 record by over three seconds.
On a good day for record breaking – chilly but still – Wesley’s Stephen Rice added almost two metres to the old senior javelin best when he threw 59.48.
St Fintan’s Sutton was having a good day, with Cillian Kirwan running a smart race to take the senior 800m title, and a delighted Eoin Strutt winning the inter 1500m.
At the Munster Championships at a blustery CIT, Sean Tobin of High School Clonmel was the clear winner of both the seniro 800m and 1500m, both in record times. He ran 1:50.33 for the 800 and 3:50.54 for 1500m. David Cussen of Col an Spioraid Naomh was another record-breakers winning the senrior high with a leap of 2.05.
Of the girls, Alice Akers of Scarriff set a new inter hammer best of 48.32, while Phil Healy of Col na Toirbhirte in Bandon, improved the senior 200m best to 23.95 and also won the 100m.
