Phil Healy Runs 7.46 for 60m in Athlone; Proper 4th in Sheffield

Sprinter Phil Healy’s time of 7.46 secs for the 60m proved the highlight of the inaugural National Club Indoor League held in Athlone.

In her first year as a senior, Healy stormed down the track to beat old rival Sarah Lavin, now with UCD, who clocked 7.61 secs, with Catherine McManus of Celtic DCH third in 7.66 secs. Lavin had earlier run 8.40 secs in her specialist 60m hurdles.

Ian McDonald of Crusaders won the men’s 60m hurdles in 8.34 secs, while David Hynes from Menapians AC produced the fastest men’s 60m time of the day when he ran 6.81 secs in the second round. Also under seven seconds was Jamie Davis of Raheny Shamrock who ran 6.96 secs.

DSD’s Siofra Cleirigh Buttner opened her indoor season with a clear victory in the 800m in 2 mins 9.13 sec. Fastest of the men was Robert Tully of Star of the Sea AC in 1:52.00.

In the field, Mid-Sutton’s Sarah McCarthy won the long jump with a 5.68m leap. Eoin Keith of St Abban’s AC proved best of the men with 6.68m, while Raheny’s Stuart Greene won the pole vault with 4.40m. Winners of the shot put were Eoin Moylan of Crusaders and Alanna Frataroli from Limerick AC.

In the team placings. St Abban’s topped the rankings for both men and women. Round two of the league takes place on February 22, with the final on March 16.

* Masters were also in action and in the 60m,  DSD’s Shane Sheridan set a  new Irish M55 record of 7.97secs , beating the old record of 8.11secs. This is just 18 days after he broke the M50 60m record running his last race in the age group.

* Irish multi-events record holder Kelly Proper of Ferrybank got 2014 off to a flying start when she finished fourth at the  English Senior Combined Events Championships  in Sheffield. Proper’s best event proved to be the 60m hurdle where she picked up 978 points for her time of  8.68 secs – a personal best.  In her specialist long jump, her leap of 6.24 was worth a further 924 points and was the best of  the day. Add to that a 1.57 m high jump  (701 points), 10.82m in the shot  (583 points) and finally 2 mins  27.08 secs (730 points) for 800m for a total of 3,916 points. Winner was Karla Drew of City of Sheffield with 4,157 points.

* Cian O’Reilly and Clodagh O’Reilly made it a family double at the Attract Doherty Pink ‘n’ Gold 5km in Co Cavan.
