Sprinter Jason Smyth and middle distance man Michael McKillop both struck gold at Paralympic Athletics World Championships in Doha, Qatar, this evening.
Smyth won the T13 100m in 10.62seconds to take his fifth world title and his third at 100m; the other two are at 200m. After knee surgery earlier this year – and the imminent arrival of his first child – Smyth won’t defend his 200m title this year.
Just as Smyth’s medal ceremony finished, McKillop lined out in the T38 800m. With just over a lap to go, he opened up a gap of about ten metres on the chasers and came home in a season’s best of 2 mins 01.31 secs with Tunisia’s Abbes Saidi second in 2:02.34. Both athletes aim to stretch their unbeaten records at their third Paralympics next summer in Rio.
