Wins for Louis O’Loughlin of Moyle Park in the junior boys race and for Sarah Healy of Holy Child Killiney inter girls made it a great day for Dublin-based Irish athletes at the SIAB Schools International Cross–Country in Falkirk, Scotland. Best of the Irish junior girls was Rebecca Wallace 11th, while best of the inter boys was Sean O’Leary 13th. England won all four teams races. Ireland finished third in the inter girls and junior boys races.
Ireland would appear to have won the senior boys’ 8000m, with Craig McMeechan of Bangor Grammar winning the race, Cathal Doyle of St Aidan’s 3rd and Brian Flanagan, also St Aidan’s, 5th (open to correction). In the senior girls race, Niamh Corry of Malahide CC was 4th, Niamh Ni Chiardha of Col Iosagain 5th, Clodagh O’Reilly of Loreto Cavan 6th and Eimear Fitzpatrick of Our Lady’s Templeogue 8th. Scotland was first team followed by Ireland and Wales (again open to correction); English schools teams did not compete at senior level.
JOE GOUGH was narrowly beaten into second place in the M60 800m held at the World Indoors in Portland, Oregon. In a blanket finish to the race, Gough literally fell over the line losing out to British athlete David Roy Wilson. Wilson was timed at 2:15.90; Gough at 2:16.01. Third was Oleksandro Lysenko of Ukraine in 2:17.38.
At the Glo Health Juvenile Indoors, where relays dominated, the standout performance was record of 16.09m in the M17 shot putt for James Kelly of Finn Valley was the outstanding individual performer with a championship best performance of 16.09m in the U17 Shot Put.
LAURA GRAHAM of Mourne Runners set a new course record of 79 mins 21 secs when finishing first woman at the Larne Half Marathon. The time was also a personal best for Graham. Race winner was Gideon Kimosap of Project Africa Athletics in 67.28
