NO SAMON NO FUTCHER

“THE writing was on the wall for Fianna Fail TD Cecilia Keaveney when she returned to her Donegal North East constituency on Sunday following the Ard Fheis.

Emblazoned in blue paint across the wall at the front of the family home in the seaside town of Moville was the slogan ‘No Samon No Futcher Thanks FF’.

A scenes of crime officer carried out an examination of the scene on the Greencastle Road yesterday morning.

Reacting to the graffiti, which was discovered by her widowed mother, Helen, on her way to Mass, a furious Cecilia Keaveney, vowed she would not be intimidated by such cowardly tactics.

“This type of attack on my family home is totally unacceptable. A new and sinister type of approach to resolving issues is emerging in Donegal North East and I will not be intimidated or bullied by a minority of thugs.”

This news item has been haunting me. Was it really the work of a bunch of illiterates? Or is it some kind of super-subtle post-modernist comment on our society? How could anyone be such an awful speller? And yet he or she got the “thanks” right, a word which these days usually comes out as “tanks”.
Having said that, my six-year-old niece was reading me her first attempt at phonetic writing earlier today – words like “nunifomms”(uniforms) featured in her account of a typical school day. Must get her to write “salmon” and “future” and see what she comes up with…
