New Athlone Track hosts multieventers

A smell of barely dried paint and traces of sawdust greeted competitors  at the  National Combined Events Indoor Championships – the second official event held at the magnificent new indoor track in  Athlone IT, following Tuesday’s  AIT v DCU match.
A few technical glitches meant that the event ran well over its scheduled time, but the junior women’s pentathlon  was completed by 5pm, with Katie O’Donoghue of Craughwell  just edging out Vivian Fleischer of Celbridge and Kilkenny’s Caitriona Twomey. Equally close was the men’s junior competition where Shane Aston of Trim was just 23 points clear of Eric Stam from Bandon,  and Kieran McGinley four points adrift in third place.
An impressive winner of the senior men’s title was Kilkenny’s Michael Bowler, who thre 11.62 in the shot and ran 6.11 for the hurdles.
* Mile times from the USA – Shane Quinn 4:12.97 URI Invitational; Anthony Lieghio 4:14.87 Texan A&M and David McCarthy 3:57.22 behind Galen Rupp at BU Terrier Meet.
* A contingent of  English visitors turned up for the Parkrun in Malahide; one of them, Steve Darby has 193 Parkruns to his credit. Brilliant news is that Dublin’s second Parkrun will start in Marlay Park on Saturday March 9 (9.30); see Facebook for updates.
