Nat T-F Day 2: Mageean Clocks PB in 800m. Doubles for Lawler, Proper, Treacy,

IMG_8277Ciara Mageean of UCD took the Athlete of the Meet award for her scintillating victory in the women’s 800m at the second day of the Glo Health National Track and Field Championships in Santry.

Mageean, who had won the 1500m last year after a long break from the sport, was out on her own from the start and finished in a personal best time of 2 mins 02.98 secs. Laura Crowe of Riocht finished second after passing a fading Ciara Everard from UCD with about 200 metres to go.

Marcus Lawler of St LOT and Ferrybank’s Kelly Proper both had sprint doubles. In the case of Proper, her 100m and 200m victories brought her tally of Irish titles up to 17. She opted out of the long jump, won by Mary McLoone of Tir Chonaill who had won the triple jump a day earlier.

A much tougher double was attempted by Sara Treacy of Dunboyne, who lined out in the 1500m a day after winning her second steeplechase title. Despite feeling a bit stiff, Treacy ran a smart race, leading from the front and keeping her fellow steeplechaser Kerry O’Flaherty from Newcastle at bay.

In the men’s 800m, Mark English of UCD was pushed hard by Clonliffe’s Declan Murray but always looked in control and won in a leisurely time of 1:50.94. No problems either for Thomas Barr of Ferrybank in the 400m hurdles which he won from his training partner Paul Byrne of St Abban’s.

Winning the men’s 400m in 46.20 secs was Clonliffe’s Brian Gregan. The previous day, Gregan had clocked a time of 45.81 secs in Belgium finishing second in a race behind Kevin Borlee who won in 45.79 secs. Brian Murphy of Crusaders broke 47  seconds to finish second – good news for the Irish 4 x400m team heading for Beijing.  In the women’s 400m, Sinead Denny of DSD, runner-up for the past two years, passed Jenna Bromell in the finishing straight to win in a PB 53.98 secs.

DSD’s Kevin Batt ran a solid race to win the 5000m, as did Thomas Cotter of Dunleer to regain the steeplechase title. In the men’s shot, Sean Breathnach’s winning heave of 17.63m was the third best ever for these championships. Galwayman Breathnach, now 36, is training for the World Masters Games in the autumn. On Saturday competing in a British League meet in Liverpool, he won the shot with a personal best 17.84m.

Shock of the day came in the men’s 10,000m walk, where pre-race favourite Rob Heffernan was disqualified. Winning the race in a personal best IMG_827240:04.29 was defending champion Alex Wright of Leevale. Barry Pender won an absorbing men’s high jump, with a best of 2.15 in less attempts than second placed Kourosh Foroughi of Star of the Sea. Both men attempted 2.19.  Raheny Shamrock won both the men and women’s 4x400m relays.
