Morland breaks Irish heptathlon record at Santry. Plus roads.

IMG_3167Elizabeth Morland of Cushinstown AC made a small piece of Irish athletics history when she set senior, U23 and junior records for the women’s heptathlon at the Glo Health National Combined Events in Santry.

Morland’s score of 5545 points smashed Kelly Proper’s 2013 record of 5442 points set in Florence. It also qualified her for the World Juniors. She picked up her biggest total of 990 points in the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.92 secs. In the high jump, her 1.70m effort was worth 855 points and her 10.53m shot brought a further 564 points. In the 200m, sheIMG_3192 clocked 891 points for her time of 24.95 sec;  her 5.75m long jump gave her 774 points and her 39.84m javelin effort 664 points. Finally came the 800m, where she crossed the line in 2:21.22 for 807 points.

In all but the long jump and 200m, she scored higher points than Proper who is currently injured. It gave her the national junior (U20) title.

Naomi Morgan of City of Derry Spartans won the senior women’s title with a score of 4409 points. Not too far behind were Karen Dunn of Bohermeen on 3981 points and Snezana Bechtina of  Clonliffe with 3741 points.

Winning the men’s senior title with a score of 6398 points was Shane Aston of Trim AC. Rolus Olusa on Donore was second with a personal best score of 5622 points and Mark Rodgers of St Peter’s third with 5291.

First junior on 5499 points was Michael Surnam of City of Derry, while first youth was Jonathan McKenna of St LOT, who only took up the event seven months ago, and scored 5683 points. Best in the girls’ youth category was Katherine O’Connor of Dundalk St Gerard’s with 5074 points. Liscarroll’s Vickie Cusack was second with 443 points and Anne Corcoran of Ferrybank third with 4403 points.

Biggest men’s score of the day  – 7521 points –  came from English visitor Liam Ramsey of City and Sheffield and Deane. Ramsey had missed out on a place at the annual Gotzis multi-events festival and came to Dublin with three clubmates aiming to better the English standard of 7400 points.

In the masters pentathlon (hurdles, HJ, shot, LJ, 800m or 1500m, Geraldine Finegan of North East Runners produced a score of 3023 points to finish best of the women and first W50. Highest score  of  2438 among  the men came from Paschal Healy of Waterford AC who was first M40. Adrian McGinley of Templemore won theM35 title with a score of 2288 points; Peadar McGing of DSD was first M50  with 2079 points.

The championships took place in conjunction with the AI Games, where Iveragh’s Adam King hammer throw of 70.48m was also a World Juniors qualifying mark. Molly Scott of St LOT won the 100m hurdles in 13.78 secs; Alana Lally of UCD clocked 2:11.87 to win the women’s 800m, with Raheny’s Kieran Kelly winning the men’s race in 1:49.17.

In an exciting 3000m, MSB’s John Coghlan surged away for the win in 8:27.61; Emmet Jennings of DSD had tried to stay with Coghlan and was rewarded with second place in 8:32.29. Third in 8:35.14 was DSD’s Rob Corbally.Both 100m races produced fast time thanks to strong following winds. Megan Marrs of City of Lisburn won the women’s race in 11.65 secs (+3.6 wind), while Jonathan Browning of Ballymena and Antrim ran 10.65 secs (+2.4 wind) for victory in the men’s race. In the women’s discus, Tralee’s Clare Fitzgerald  threw a 52.59m PB.

EOIN McCULLOUGH of Dublin club Three Rock, produced the best result of the Irish at the European Orienteering Championships in Jesenik, Czech Republic.

McCullough finished 16th in the middle distance race. Irish No 1 Nick Simenon from Cork qualified in 13th place for the A final in the sprint race. Later, he dropped out of the long distance qualifier.

In a competitive relay, the Irish trio of McCullough, Conor Short and Ruaii Short beat teams from New Zealand, Belgium and Romania to finish 33rd.
