West Waterford’s David McCarthy ran a time of 3 mins 42.33 secs to finish third in the men’s 1500m at the Vienna Indoors last night. McCarthy’s target is the World Indoor Championships from March 7-9 in Poland.
In theĀ women’s 1500m, Claire Tarplee of Dundrum South Dublin ranĀ a personal best indoors 4:14.61, also finishing third. The qualification mark for the World Indoors is 4:14.
Tarplee had kept a low profile since competing at the World Student Games in Kazan last July where she finished sixth in the 1500m in a a time of 4:13.37. Her personal best of 4:11.35 was set in Gothenburg last June; she had also competed in the European Indoors earlier in the year, clocking a time of 4:15.16.
Tarplee had returned to competition at a low-key cross-country race last December and ran a pipe-opening 4:23.21 at the BMC meet in Sheffield last month.
Also in action in Vienna was Joe Warne of Doheny who ran 1:51.30 in the 800m, finishing third in his heat and 15th overall.
Athletes aiming for the World Indoors must compete in the Woodie’s DIY National Indoors in Athlone on February 7/8.
