Robbie Matthews of Dunshaughlin continued his recent winning streak with victory in the Simon Comber 6km in Navan. Matthews crossed the line in 19 mins 3 secs; second was Raheny master Mick Traynor in 19.14. First woman was Lorraine Manning of Raheny in her first victory for some time.
* Earlier in the week, perfect running conditions ensured faster than usual times at the EBS Beach 5km on Sandymount Strand, Dublin. Winner was Kevin O’Brien , a refugee from East Cork, while first woman was Aer Lingus and BHSAA veteran Orland Gormley (who beat her husband Tom Loftus!).
A total of 14 turned out for RTE and they got their reward when the team of Paddy Lyons 4th, Terry Clarke 31st and Patrick Kennedy 38 won the A grade. Special well done to Niall Matthews, who had been forced to drop out of the Belfast Marathon a day earlier (a first DNF in a long career) and to Mary Jennings, who finished Belfast in 3 hrs 21 mins and helped the Tecahers to women’s team victory.
