Round-Up: 11th title for Carmel Parnell. Gold also for Michael Harty and M35, M45, M60, W60 teams (updated again)

Carmel Parnell of Leevale finished first W60 at the British and Irish Masters Cross-Country International in Tollcross Park,Glasgow, this morning. It was a record eleventh title for Carmel, who was also leading the W60 team to victory.

Second place went to Christine Kennedy, who is back living in London after a long sojourn in the USA, while making it an Irish clean sweep in third was Pauline Moran. In a hugely competitive age group, Nuala Reilly of Drogheda and District, produced a cracking run to finish 12th only two weeks after her marathon debut in Dublin.

Best men’s performance came from Michael Harty, who won the M35-49 race from team mates Paddy Hamilton and Tim Twomey. With Emmett Dunleavy fourth and Michael Herlihy sixth,  the Irish were  comfortable winners of the team race. For Northern Ireland, Alan Bogle was fifth M35 and sixth overall, which means green Irish vests took six of the top seven places in the race.  England’s Howard Bristow , first M40 in fourth place, was the only interloper.

With Stephen Duncan just pipping Peter Matthews  for second M45  (the pair were given the same time),  Des Kennedy 6th and Gerard Heery 11th, Ireland also took M45 team gold .There was more team gold for Ireland in the M60 class, where Paul Elliott was 2nd, Neilus Ahearne 5th and Martin Kearney 9th.

JJ Murphy was another winner for Ireland running barefoot in the M65 class; Martin McEvilly of Galway was 7th and John Todd of Tullamore 11th, with the team second.   Overall,  England won the men, women’s and overall categories.  Ireland was second overall, two points ahead of Scotland. The Irish men, with three team wins and four seconds, finished second behind England. The Irish women, with a win a second, and five thirds, were third. DANIEL RYAN OF CBS Thurles posted the highest score of the day at the All Ireland Schools Combined Events Championships in Athlone. Ryan won the senior boys’ title with a total of 3725 points. He notched up over 600 points in all five events – 60m hurdles, shot put, 200m, long jump and 800m. His highest points came in the hurdles,where his time of 8.36 secs earned him 893 points. Also impressive was his 14.47m effort in the shot, enough for 757 points). Second was Jonathan McKenna of Patrician Newbridge with 31.24 points.

In a thrilling girls inter competition, six  of the athletes scored over 3000 points.  Winner of the close fought competition was Anna McCauley of Methodist College with 3573 points.  A close second was Ruby Millett of Kilkenny College, with the pair very evenly matched in the hurdles,  and high jump and Millet best at the long jump. Making the difference for McCauley was her shot put and her 800m.

Winning the boys’ inter title was Tony Odubote of Rose College Ennis on 3396 points.
