Loreto Kilkenny made it an eighth consecutive win at the Loreto Schools Track and Field Championships held in Santry today.

Big points scorer for Kilkenny was Ciara Deely winner of the senior 80m hurdles and 2nd in the high jump and anchor woman of the winning 4 x 100m team. All the first year members of the squad made their contribution by finishing in the top six of every event.

Loreto Mullingar made quite an impression on the track, with Maimouna Fane winning the senior 200m and her younger sister Awa the 100m, while in gut-busting senior 1500m, Claire Fagan inched out her team mate Alanna Bate. In the junior 800m, Caoimhe O’Brien of Mullingar passed Kilkenny’s Ciara O’Keeffe with the line in sight for victory; Amy McCabe of Beaufort was third. There was another victory for Mullingar in the senior 800m won by Laura Whitelaw, with Kilkenny’s Annie O’Connor second and Richael Browne of Bray third.

Winning an exciting junior 200m was Orla Winston of Loreto Clonmel, who just made iIMG_1123t home ahead of Wexford pair April Keeling and Leah Dwyer.

A clear winner of the senior 400m was Mollie O’Reilly of Loreto Dalkey. Enya Haigney of Loreto Omagh finished second ahead of Niamh McMullen from Kilkenny.

Making it a double in the junior discus and javelin was Eva O’Donoghue of Loreto Beaufort. Nicola Torrans of St Stephen’s Green was a close second in the discus, with Sinead O’Keeffe of Kilkenny second in the javelin.

Collecting the winning overall shield for Kilkenny was team captain Lauren Dermody. The Loreto competition has been going  in some form since 1902, making it (probably) the oldest girls’ athletics competition in the country.
