Mark English of UCD didn’t start in the 800m at the second day of the Gyulai Istvan Memorial in Székesfehérvár, Hungary this evening. Winning the race was double Olympian champion and world record holder David Rudisha of Kenya.Kenyan Nicholas Kiplangat Kipkoech who has a season’s best of 1:44.9 (hand-held) is also listed to run.
Ireland’s steeplechase women were in action on the opening of the meet last night , with both getting under 10 minutes for the first time this season. Michele Finn of Leevale finished ninth in 9:55.10 and Newcastle’s Kerry O’Flaherty 11th 9:57.47. Race winner was Etenesh Diro Neda of Ethiopia 9:20.01. Both Irish women will run at the Letterkenny International on Friday where they will be chasing the World Championships qualifying mark of 9 mins 42 secs.
HEPTATHLETES Elizabeth Morland and Kate O’Connor have both selected for the Irish team heading to the European U20 Championships in Grossetto Italy, starting on July 20. Also selected are Darragh McElhinney in the 1500m, sprinters Ciara Neville and Sharlene Mawdsley, and thrower Michaela Walsh who all have a chance of a medal. The team of 40 includes 23 women and 17 men.
