Freddy, Pauline Win Longford in Record Times

Freddy Keron Sittuk  not only won the Pat the Baker Longford Marathon but set a new course record of 2 hrs 22 mins 36 secs. Freddy, from Kenya, has become a familiar figure on the Irish roads since arriving here for the Belfast Marathon in May. In second place in 2:31.51 was Clonliffe’s Gary O’Hanlon running his sixth marathon this year; he has finished either first or second in all.

Winning a remarkable fourth consecutive women’s title was Tullamore’s Pauline Curley in an excellent 2:44.25, which is a new women’s course record. It was also the 44-year-old Curley’s fastest time in some years. It’s been a good year for her – last June  she won the Cork Marathon in 2:45.5 and a few months earlier she took the national master’s cross country title. She was also second woman in last October’s Dublin Marathon in 2:45.51.

Curley has been a Longford “regular” for many years, winning the half marathon for the first time in 2006 and again in 2007 and 2009 (2008 was the year she so memorably ran for Ireland at the Olympics).  Among her other big achievements is her 2009 world master’s marathon title with a time of 2:43.56. Not bad for a woman who first represented Ireland at the 2002 World Cross!

Winning the half marathon  in 68 mins 46 secs was West Waterford’s Philip Harty. Michelle McGee of Bros Pearse, running her debut half marathon in her native county,  was first woman in 85 mins 8 secs.

* At the Dublin City Triathlon in Islandsbridge and the Phoenix Park, Olympian Gavin Noble proved the class of the field in the Olympic distance race. He came out of the water in first place and never relinquished his lead, finishing in 1 hrs 57 mins 25 secs.  Kevin Thornton in second place was almost four minutes behind.  The women’s race saw a battle  to the line, with Rachel Glendon  just holding off a fast finishing Joyce Wolfe.

* Clonliffe’s Sara McCormack who is based in Scotland ran 15.45.61, for 5,000m record at the BMC meet in Coventry. Eoin Pierce finished 2nd in the A 1500 in 3.54.02. Alistair Cragg, also Clonliffe, has won the Edmonton Half Marathon in Canada in 64 mins 59 secs.
