Freddie Keron Sittuk the Kenyans who has been staying in Ireland for the past month, was first home at the Strawberry Half Marathon in Enniscorthy.
Sittuk, who finished fourth in the Belfast Marathon and has since spent time in both Dublin and Donegal, was wearing the colours of Sliabh Bhui Rovers from nearby Ferns. On a warm day for distance running, he pushed the pace from the start, finishing in 69 minutes 8 seconds. Second was Sandis Bralitis of West Waterford now back fighting fit after a two-year battle with Achilles tendon problem, while third was Michael Shannon from Shannon.
First woman was Jackie Carthy from Kilmore, who admitted that she had found the warm conditions very tough on the hilly course. Her time of 81 mins 47 secs was enough for 11th place overall and put her well clear of Amy Masner of Parnell, who is coached by marathon legend Mary Hickey in Arklow.
* John Coghlan (MSB) beat Colin Costelleo (Star of the Sea) to win the Blanch 5km in 15 mins 7 secs. A day earlier, Coghlan had just edged out Conor Bradley of City of Derry to win the 1500m at the IMC meet in Greystones. Finishing down the field was Galway ultra man Gary Thornton. Clonliffe’s AAron Hanlon won the 5000m in 15 mins 1.18 secs, with Andrew Connick of Ferrybank second and Roger Barrett from Ballina a surprise third. Race of the day was the women’s 1500m, with Becky Alexander just outstretching her Clonliffe clubmate Becky Woods
* At the European Clubs Championships in the Algarve, where the highlight so far for the DSD women has been a 1500m fourth place in 4:22.37 for Siofra Cleirigh Buttner and a massive 400m PB of 54.32 for Sinead Denny. Maria McCambridge was fourth in the 5000m and fifth in the 3000m. DSD sorely missed Deirdre Ryan in the high jump and had no-one in the pole vault. Steffi Creaner, running for Birchfield, was 4th in the 200m in 24.77 and ran 12.43 in the 100m. DSD, sixth last year, finished eighth this time, which means Ireland is relegated.
*Clonliffe men and women’s track and field teams both topped the table at the first round of the National League in Santry. For the men, winners were Tomas Rauktys in both shot and discus, Ryan Whelan with a javelin PB of 53.81m, Dave Donegan pole vault, Ryan Cleary 3,000 race walk, Ian Guiden 1500m,Dave Fitzmaurice 5,000m; also hammer and 4 x 100m. It meant Clonliife topped the points table with 126 points, ahead of Menapians 120 and North Down 105.
The women’s team with 105 points finished clear of Ferrybank 103 and Raheny 98.5. Winners were Ciara McCallion 400m, Eleanor Alexander 1500m and Denise Byrne in the javelin, with second places for Roisin Leahy 3000m, Michelle English 800m and both relay teams all adding to the points total.
* Gary O’Hanlon of Clonliffe won the Newry Marathon. This is Gary’s fourth marathon win this year – he has also won in Connemara, Limerick and Kildare. Alan O’Shea travelled to Ballina and won the half marathon there; Karen Alexander was first woman.
* Catherina McKiernan, now with the Annalee club in Cavan, was seventh overall and first woman in the Castle 5km. Daughter Deirbhile was third and first under 14.
*Stephen Scullion of Aldershot was ninth at the Great Manchester 10km in 29 mins 48 secs. Mark Kenneally of Clonliffe was 18th in 30 mins 28 secs; Letterkenny master Ciaran Doherty clocked a PB 31.15.
* A small Irish army travelled into the middle of Europe and inflicted heavy casualties at the European Masters’ Non-Stadia Championships (someone please think up a better name for this?!) in Upice, Czech Republic. In total, the team of six took four gold medals as well as threesilver and one bronze.
M45 – 10k road race : team of 1st Gerry Ryan, 2nd Mick Traynor, 6th Damien Martin took gold. Cross-country relays : same team also took gold. Half Marathon: 1st Mick Traynor, 4th Damien Martin; team 2nd. M60 – Half Marathon: 3rd Pat O’ Shea bronze medal. 30km walk: 2nd Sean McMullen.
