Foroughi 4th after European Cup Combined Events Day 1. Also Juvenile Day 1

Irish decathlon champion Kourosh Foroughi is lying fourth after the first day of competition at the European Cup Combined Eevnts 2nd League in Inowroclaw, Poland.

Foroughi accumulated 3692 points, just three points off third place. He ran 11.61 secs in the 100m,  equaled his PB with 6.87m in the long jump and got 11.47m in the shot. In his specialist high jump, he came out on top with  with 2.16m (three failures at 2.19m) and finally ran 2.53.69 secs in the 400m.

Behind him, Michael Bowler is 17th on 2741 points; he finished third last year.  Bowler ran 11.47 secs in the 100m;  in the long jump he produced a best of 6.67m, while his shot putt of 12.20m proved to be his best event of the day. In the in the high jump, he went over 1.80 and then came disaster – in the 400m, the final event of the day, he  was disqualified.  Also competing is Shane Ashton  who ran 11.80 secs in the 100m,  had a long jump of 6.17 and a shot best of 11.64. Current leader is Edgars Erins of Latvia on 3806 points.

Five events remain to be contested tomorrow – 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m.

CHRISTINE McMAHON   of Ballymena comfortably won the 400m hurdles at the St Niklaas meet in Belgium in 58.54 – off her season’s best so far of 58.10 secs. Paul Byrne was second in the men’s 400m hurdles in 50.72secs; Brandon Array ran 54.14 secs for fifth place. Winner was Michael Bultheel in 49.65 secs.

IMG_6419At the opening day of the Glo Health Juvenile Track and Field Championships in Tulamore, David Ryan set a new record in the M16 long jump improving on his brother Daniel’s previous record.  Winners in the 800m included Emma O’Brien of Inbhear Dee W17, Molly Brown of MSB W15, Donore’s Louis O’Loughlin, M15 and Corinne Johanna Kenny of St Laurence O’Toole’s who just missed out on the W14 record after a determined solo effort. In the W18 800m, Amy Hamill of Glaslough Harriers was a clear winner ahead of WSAF’s Carla Sweeney. Winning the M19 steeplechase was Brian Flanagan of Clonliffe.

In attendance was world 50km race walking champion Robert Heffernan, whose daughter was running in the 600m. Heffernan’s next race is a 3000m at the Cork City Sports on Tuesday. He then heads to Morocco for altitude training before the World Championships at the end of next month.
