Kevin Mulcaire of Ennis took over four seconds off John Treacy’s 40-year old Irish junior record when he ran 14 mins 02.6 secs in the 5000m at the BMC Meet in Stretford, Manchester yesterday.
A thrilling race saw Mulcaire leading for much of the race and losing out in the end only to Andrew Hayes of Sheffield who ran 14 mins 01.30 secs. A few weeks ago, Mulcaire ran 14:08.65 in his debut over the distance at Greystones.
One place behind him in 14:11.09 was Paul Pollock of Annadale, while seventh in a personal best 14:19.05 was Kevin Seaward. In the women’s 5000m, Emma Mitchell was third in a PB 16:57.14. Running the 800m was UCD’s Ciara Everard who finished fourth in 2:03.34 – close to her PB of 2:02.96. In the same race, Claire Tarplee of DSD was seventh in 2:11.74, while Aislinn Crossey of UCD was sixth in the B race in 2:10.26. Niall Tuohy of Ferrybank ran the men’s A race, where he finished fourth in 1:50.11; his PB is 1:49.01. In the B race, Finn Valley’s Mark Hoy was second in 1:50.86.
MSB’s John Coghlan won the 3000m steeplechase in 9:04.24, with Jack O’Leary of Mullingar Harriers, aged 17, running 9:10.88 on his debut in this discipline.
In London, John Travers of Donore ran 29 mins 04. 66 secs and Maria McCambridge 33 mins 15 secs at the Highgate Night of 10,000m PBs last night.
Both finished fourth in their races. Winner of the women’s race was Rhona Auckland in 32 mins 18 secs, while overall, eighteen men went under 29 mins 59 secs.
