Mark English and Karl Griffin both came safely through the men’s 800m heats at the European U23 Track and Field Championships in Tallin, Estonia.
Running in the third of four heats, Griffin finished a comfortable second in 1:49.54. Next up was English in the fourth and final heat. In a tactical race, won by Germany’s Dennis Kruger in 1:52.88, English finished joint second with Aaron Botterman of Belgium in 1:52.91. Next up for the pair are the semi-finals tomorrow (16.55 Irish time).
In the 200m heats, Lawler won his race 200m heat in an untroubled 20.94 after an excellent “bend”.
There was disappointment for Sarah Lavin who was just one hundredth of a second off qualifying for the semi-finals of the 100m hurdles. In the third heat, she finished fifth in a time of 13.87 secs.
