UCD’s Mark English proved the star of the Morton Games in Santry when he won the international 800m in a personal best 1.45.32, just outside the World Championships A standard of 1.45.30. Paul Robinson of St Coca’s finished joint 4th in a new PB of 1.45.86, also inside the World Championships B standard.
Winning the 400m hurdles in 50.04 was Ferrybank’s Thomas Barr who ran 49.78 at the recent European U23 Championships. Mexican Juan Luis Barrios won the Albie Thomas 3000m in 7:45.12, with Donore’s John Travers 6th in 7:58.51. In the 100m, Derry’s Jason Smyth, in his last race before the IPC World Championships, ran 10.61 in the heats, but opted out of the final, where Steven Colvert of Crusaders finished second behind the American Rae Edwards in 10.52.
DSD’s new signing Jennifer Carey won the women’s 400m in a 52.98 – the fastest time by an Irish athlete this season and enough to put her fourth on the all-time Irish list. In a close run women’s 100m, Irish heptathlon record holder Kelly Proper of Ferrybank was first home in 11.75 seconds, with South Africa’s Carina Horn second and Irish 100m record holder Ailis McSweeney of Leevale third in 11.92. The women’s 800m proved a great race with the top five all under 2 mins 2 secs, among them Laura Crowe of Riocht with 2:02.63 and UCD’s Ciara Everard on 2:02.96, both of them personal bests, although Everard had run 2:02.54 indoors.
In the Morton Mile that closed out the programme, eight athletes broke four minutes among them West Waterford’s David McCarthy and Kilkenny’s Eoin Everard.
