After two second places in recent years, Raheny’s Mick Clohisey won his first Dublin senior title at the Dublin Cross-Country Championships in Tymon Park.
In balmy conditions, Brandon Hargreaves of DSD took the early lead, with Clohisey, his Raheny team mate Freddy Sittuk and Clonliffe’s Sergiu Ciobanu in close attendance. Not far behind was former champion John Coghlan of MSB, who had finished second behind Hargreaves at the Autumn Cross-Country Open.
With Ciobanu falling off the pace, Clohisey took over in front, with Sittuk – running just six days after the Dublin Marathon – and Hargreaves proving difficult to shake off. Only towards the finish did Clohisey get the edge he needed to win in 32 mins 9 secs for the hilly 10,000m course. Sittuk was second and Hargreaves third. Raheny finished first team ahead of Donore.
No such drama in the women’s 6000m, where Caroline Crowley of Crusaders was a comfortable winner ahead of Ciara Durkan of Skerries. With Orla Drumm third, Marie Hyland fifth and Ilona McElroy 14th, Crusaders retained their team title.
Pierre Murchan of DCD was a clear winner of the junior men’s 6000m; in second place, Cathal Doyle was leading Clonliffe to team victory. A junior women’s race that attracted just 15 starters and one full team was won by Carla Sweeney of WSAF. Raheny took the team medals.
- Likely to get a lot more discussion over the next few weeks is a bizarre ruling with regards to the awarding of championship titles. Last Monday, Freddy Sittuk of Raheny was the first Irish club man home in the national marathon. He was not awarded the medal because he’s not a full-time resident and doesn’t hold an Irish passport. Yet under the current regulations, Freddy, who spends several months here every year, still counted for the team points and could have been awarded second or third place medals. So if Freddy had beaten his training partner Mick Clohisey today, what would have happened? Fortunately, he finished second and graciously accepted his medal. This one will run and run.
NEW YORK-based Irish woman Margaret McMahon was first W45 at the New York Marathon finishing 36th woman overall in 2:56.35. Una Plant of Kinsale Tri Club was second W45 and 37th overall in 2:56.34. First home of 452 Irish runners was Mike Fingleton in 2:43.57. Derek Griffin was second Irish in 2:52.49, while Joe Wright’s time of 2:53.06 was only slightly slower than the time he ran in Dublin six days earlier. Race winners were Stanley Biwott in 2:10.34 and Mary Keitany in 2:24.25.
SARAH COLLINS, whose family comes from Cork, continued her impressive season when she won the women’s 6km and helped Providence to team victory at Big East Cross-Country in Ohio. Siofra Cleirigh Buttner of DSD finished ninth. In the men’s 8km, Hugh Armstrong from Ballina was 12th and Clonliffe’s Aaron Hanlon 14th.
A YOUNG Irish team competed at the Lotto Cross in Mol, Belgium, where Hope Saunders of Clonliffe and Isabel Carron made it an Irish one-two in the junior women’s race. Riocht’s rising star Shona Heaslip finished seventh in the women’s senior 6km race finishing in 22 mins 9 secs. Winner was Louise Carbon of Belgium in 21:12. Finishing 29th was Grace Lynch in 25:06, Mark O’Sullivan was 29th in the men’s senior race. In the junior men’s race, Padraig Moran of Mullingar Harriers was ninth in 20 mins 40 secs.
