Mick Clohisey of Raheny Shamrock and Clonliffe’s Sarah McCormack made it a Dublin double at the Woodie’s DIY National Cross-Country Championships at Dundalk IT.
Clohisey and Gary Thornton of Galway City Harriers carved out an early lead in the men’s 12km race, with defending champion Sergiu Ciobanu of Clonliffe running on his own for third place.
The team contest between Clonliffe Harriers and Dundrum South Dublin proved epic, with DSD only winning by a single point.
The women’s race over 8mk provided an enthralling three way battle betweenMaria McCambridge of DSD, Clonliffe’s Sarah McCormack, and newcomer Michelle Magee of Brothers Pearse, winner of novice and intermediate in her first season as a club athlete.
First McGee and then McCormack took the lead, with McCambridge drawing on all her experience to keep in touch. With the line in sight, McCormack finally pulled away to win.
It was a good day for DSD who took all four team titles for a third time in their history. Sarah Myles was the club’s only individual winner, taking the junior women’s title from Clodagh O’Reilly.
In the junior men’s 7km, Kevin Mulcaire of Ennis TC was the only non-Dublin winner across the four races. Along with Clonliffe’s Aaron Hanlon, he had forced the early pace and only broke away on the last lap to win by eight seconds. Pics at www.lindie.zenfolio.com
