Raheny’s Mick Clohisey and Maria McCambridge took the senior titles at the Glo Health National Interclub Cross-Country Championships held in Kilbroney, Co Down.

Clohisey, the defending champion, had a comfortable victory in the senior men’s 12km race over Sergiu Ciobanu of Clonliffe, DSD’s Brendan O’Neill and Clonmel’s Kevin Maunsell – the big four in the race. With Jayme Rossiter sixth, Tudor Mircea ninth and David Flynn 10th, Clonliffe regained the team title they lost to DSD last year; nine clubs entered teams.

DSD completed a clean sweep of the top three places in the women’s 8km race, with McCambridge a clear first, followed by Sarah Mulligan and Michelle McGee. With Meghan Ryan seventh, DSD were clear winners of a team competition for which only four clubs in the entire country had entered teams.

Kevin Mulcaire  not only won the men’s junior race but led Ennis TC to team victory over DSD and Clonliffe. Clonliffe’s Hope Saunders led home eighteen finishers in the junior women’s race, with DSD the winning team from Clonliffe. Of the twelve team placings, eleven went to Dublin clubs.

DSD’s “Team of 1990” was led home by Noel Berkeley in a respectable 34th place, while Inishowen’s Pauric McKinney continued his remarkable record in the race when he finished 23rd. Inishowen also sent a senior women’s team of five, who may not have been among the front-runners but did their club proud by completing one of the toughest races of the year.

THOUGHTS ON the Interclubs (encouraged by the FB debate started by Kevin English): 1 Bring the date back to mid-Feb; 2 incorporate juvenile c’ships races (three weeks before All Ireland schools) so clubs can hire a bus and turn out in ALL races; 3 Abolish inter races at all levels; 4 Hype it up; produce training plans for 12km/8km cross-country and promote it as the ultimate winter run.

RATHFARNHAM’S Sean Hehir won the Run Clare Michael Egan 5-Mile in Quilty by almost two minutes. Sean’s sister Cusha Brid was second of the women behind Sharon Rynne.

IN CORK, Leevale’s Michelle Finn, second in the intercounties last November, was eleventh overall and first woman at the Cork BHAA Gas Networks Ireland 5km at Marina. John Meade won the race.
