Cork City Sports: Healy wins 100m

After concentrating on the 400m for the past few weeks, Bandon’s Phil Healy returned to the shorter distances at last night’s 65th Cork City Sports.IMG_3837

Healy, who is on both the Irish 4x100m and 4x400m squads for the European Championships starting next week in Amsterdam, won the women’s 100m in a season’s best time of 11.52 secs, with older sister Joan second in 11.73 secs.

Other Irish winners included Cushinstown multi-eventer Elizabeth Morland in the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.68 secs. Laura Crowe of Riocht proved the class of the field in the women’s 800m winning in 2:05.73, while Adam McMullen of Crusaders won the long with a sixth round effort of 7.59m.

In the men’s 100m, four-time Paralympic champion Jason Smyth from Derry clocked 10.52 secs to finish fourth with Jonathan Browning fifth in 10.58 secs. Winner was Britain’s Kieran Daly in 10.41 secs. Best of the Irish in the 800m was Kieran Kelly of Raheny Shamrock who was fifth in 1:49.18; just behind him was Kilkenny’s Eoin Everard in 1:49.42. Winner Luke Matthews of Australia crossed the line in 1:48.11.

American athlete Reid Buchanan kicked past Australia’s Collis Birmingham on the home straight to win the men’s 3,000m in 7:52.49. Winning the mile was Ryan Gregson of Australia in 4:.01.37 with the American Ahmed Bile second in 4:02.15. Best of the Irish was Donore’s John Travers who was fourth in 4:04.12. Competing in a competitive wheelchair 800m was Kildare marathon man Patrick Monahan, who finished fourth in 1:47.22. Winner was Will Smith in 1:46.12.

Many of these athletes now travel northwards for Saturday’s Letterkenny International.
