UL broke the DCU and UCD domination of the Irish Universities Road Relays hosted by NUI Maynooth winning both the men and women’s titles.
In the women’s race, Katherine O’Keeffe got the Limerick students off to a great start coming home first with a time of 6 mins 5 secs for the opening mile. On the second leg over two miles, DCU’s Una Britton took over in front followed closely by Carla Sweeney of UCD. All changed on the third leg, also of two miles, when Olympic steeplechaser Michele Finn took over for UL and pulled them back into the lead. It was then left to Amy O’Donoghue to bring UL home for their first victory since 2003. DCU were second, UCC third and UCD – no Ciara Mageean on the team – fourth.
In the men’s race, UL lagged slightly behind on a opening leg although there was little in it, with Fionn Buttner giving UCD a slight early advantage. UL pushed to the front on leg three of three miles thanks to a strong run from Eoin Everard. Niall Tuohy, running two miles on the fourth leg, consolidated that lead and James Ledingham then brought them home on the final mile. Not even Mark English for UCD could catch them at this stage. DCU finished second and UCD third.
AT THE NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana, Sean Tobin from Clonmel finished 62nd in the men’s 10km i 30:36.4 , followed by High Armstrong of Ballina who was thirteen seconds behind for 75th place. In the women’s 6km race, Siofra Cleirigh Buttner finished 85th in 20:46.4 with Sarah Collins 94th in 20:49.2.
PAUL POLLOCK of Annadale Striders ran a time of 64 mins 43 secs at the Delhi Half Marathon in India. Next up for Pollock is the National Cross-Country Championships at Abbotstown.
