Mick Clohisey of Raheny Shamrock ran a time of 2:17.42 to finish best of the Irish in his debut marathon at Rotterdam. Thomas Frazer was just behind him in 2:17.44, while Gary Thornton of GCH ran 2:18.21 and Rathfarnham’s Sean Hehir 2:19.23. Hampered by a groin strain was Donore master John Dunne who still finished in 2:34.36.
No Irishman has run under 2:15 for some time; the last man to do so was Mark Kenneally with a time of 2:13.55 in Amsterdam in October 2011, qualifying him for the London 2012 Olympics. Just eleven seconds slower in January 2008 was Martin Fagan of Mullingar when he ran 2:14.06 in Dubai. Fagan runs the Zurich Marathon next weekend just a year after completing a two year ban for doping.
