Round-Up: Cleirigh Buttner’s Villanova gold; Barr makes mark

Siofra Cleirigh Buttner of DSD helped her American college Villanova to victory in the College Women’s Distance Medley Championships of American held in conjunction with the Penn Relays last Thursday.

Cleirigh Buttner ran the 800m leg – the third – in 2:09.91.  Also on the team were Angel Piccirillo (3:23.25), Michaela Wilkins  (56.30) and Stephanie Schappert (4:39.61). The team’s over all time was 11 mins 9.06 secs.IMG_0147

In the College Men’s 5,000m Championships, Raheny’s Kevin Dooney, running for Yale, finished sixth in 14:06.46.

At the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational in Florida, Thomas Barr won the 400m hurdles in 49.08; This time is inside the qualification mark of 49.50 secs for the World T-F Championships.

The Irish squad will travel to the Bahamas later in the week for the World Relay Championships.  There, the first eight in both the 4 x 100m and the 4 x 400 will automatically qualify for the Rio Olympics. The Irish men’s 4 x 400m squad is currently world ranked No 11.
