Carnage at Cork City Sports!

Carnage  in the sprints at the Cork City Sports with numerous false starts. In the women’s 100m, first Kelly Proper and then Ailis McSweeney were disqualified. Jessica Young of the USA stayed calm and won in 11.43. Catherine McManus of Celtic DCH won the B race in 11.82 ( -0.2 wind reading).

Among the DQs in the men’s 100m were Jamaica’s Ryan Shields. Akane Simbine of South Africa took the win in 10.48, with  English sprinter Judah Simpson second in 10.55 and Ireland’s Marcus Lawler third in 10.58. .

Earlier, Tomas Barr of Ferrybank had lifted the spirits when, despite clattering the final hurdle, he ran 50 seconds exactly for second in the 400m hurdles – a personal best and a new Irish U23 record. In the women’s 100m hurdles, Sarah Lavin set an Irish junior record of 13.36 secs.

In the 3000m walk, local hero Robert Heffernan set a new Irish record of 11 mins 11.94 secs –  also a world M35 best. Paul Robinson of St Coca’s came home first of the Irish in the mile, finishing fourth in a personal best  3:56.18. West Waterford’s David McCarthy was sixth in 3:57.85.

the long jump. Ferrybank ‘s Kelly Proper, who had competed in the European Cup multi-events at the weekend,  jumped 6.01 for third – well off her own Irish record of 6.60m.

*  Cameron Page from Gosford, Australia ran a personal best time of 3mins 54.77 secs to win the Mile at the 62nd Cork City Sports last Tuesday. Page, aged 22, whose mother’s family hails from Quilty, Co Clare and Shanagolden, Co Limerick ,was one of six athletes who recorded personal records.

Life time bests were recorded by Paul Robinson of St Coca’s with  3:56.18 , Wets Waterford’s David McCarthy, 3:57.18 and Irish schools champion, Sean Tobin from Clonmel 4:06.66 , along with third placed Garrett Heath, 3:55.91 and Portugal’s Emanuel Rolim.
