Britton Wins plus Results Jan 12-16 (ongoing)

Over a thousand young athletes turned out for the 9th DCU Schools Invitational Cross-Country at St Clare’s Glasnevin. Winners of the senior races were Mitchell Byrne of Templeogue College in his first victory at this level and Louise McPhillips of Alexandra College.
* Fionnuala Britton has won the women’s race at the Antrim International for a second year. Louise Damen, second a few years ago, was runner-up with Magdalene Masai from Kenya third, ahead of Linda Byrne.  Gladys Ganiel O’Neill  won the Ulster and NI Championships run in conjunction with the race. Best of the Irish men was Stephen Scullion, who was fifth.
Britton and probably Byrne will run at the World Cross-Country Championships in Poland but a team won’t be sent because other members of the squad are already in training for spring marathons (apparently…).

* Sprinter Steven Colvert ran 34.25 for 300m in Gran Canaria.
* Eoin Keith, who set a new Irish 72 -hour record 12 days ago, has won the Art O’Neill Ultra Challenge in the Wicklow Mountains, with a time of 6 hours  mins 35 secs.
*Mick Trayner of Raheny Shamrock won the Dublin men’s masters’ title in St Anne’s Park, beating Davey Byrne of  Tallaght. Jean Wilson of  Sportworld won the women’s 3km with Donore’s Anne Curley second.
* Maura Ginty of Sportsworld won the women’s Meet and Train Winter League 2-mile in Bush Park, Terenure. This first ever cross-country in Bushy Park attracted a record 103 runners from clubs all over Dublin  and Meath, including newcomers from Metro St Brigid’s.
* Sean Hehir of Rathfarnham WSAF won the Tom Walsh Memorial 10km in Caherconlish, Co Clare in a new course record time of 30 mins  37 secs.
