Fionnuala Britton finished second at the Great Edinburgh Cross Country with her time of 21 mins 33 secs putting her just six seconds behind 20-year-old Briton Emilia Gorecka. Spain’s Trihas Gebre was third in 21:50 with recently crowned European cross-country champion, Gemma Steele of Great Britain, eleventh.
Britton had pushed the pace from the start with the top three finishers breaking way midway through the 6km race. Dunboyne’s Sara Treacy finished 16th and Michelle Finn of Leevale 22nd.
In the Invitational Team Relay (2 x 1km), Ireland was represented by Danny Mooney of Letterkenny and DSD’s Maria McCambridge who finished eighth.
American Chris Derrick won the men’s 8km race, holding off team-mate Jacob Riley to defend his title. Britain’s Mo Farah had pulled out of the race with illness.
