Brilliant Fifth for World Class Irish Women (plus results)

At Juvenile Indoors
Fionnuala Britton may be disappointed to have finished only 14th but the Irish women’s team ran out of their collective socks to finish 5th team at the World Cross, held over a difficult, twisting course in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
Against the might of Kenya, Ethiopia and a East Africa All-Stars outfit representing the tiny Gulf state of Bahrain, taking a medal was always a tough ask. Still,  with every member of the team picking up places as the race unwound, the Irish women reinforced their position as the best in Europe by finishing fifth. Behind them was France, only beaten on count-back at the Europeans, and Great Britain.  Even better, they are already plotting to do better next year. Well done girls!
*  Joe Gough of West Waterford  has added the M60 1500m title to his haul at the European Masters Indoor Championships in San Sebastian Spain. Gough, who won the 800m in a new record time last Friday,  finished third in a tactical semi-final to make the 1500m final. He proved the class of the field in the final,  crossing the line in  4:47.00 and beating the Spaniard Luis Lahoz who ran 4.49.86 and Britain’s David Oxland, the outdoor world record holder, who was third in  4:52.13. In total, Ireland took 11 medals, four of them gold.
*John Coghlan and Maria McCambridge were the winners at the Eirgrid Dunboyne 4-mile. In the men’s race, Coghlan proved the class of the field, beating Michael Mulhare of Portlaoise comfortably. Maria McCambridge, who runs the Rotterdam Marathon in three weeks time, won the women’s race by 19 seconds from Fiona Roche of Raheny.
* Raheny’s Mick Clohisey travelled west to win the Craughwell 10-mile in 51 mins 16 secs, putting over a minute ahead of the chasers led by Michael Shannon. In a Raheny double, Elish Kelly was first woman and also seventh overall in 57 mins 44 secs.  Just two places behind was Barbara Sanchez, also Raheny with Pauline Curley  third
* At the second day of the  Woodie’s DIY National Juvenile Championships  in Athlone,
Marcus Lawler of St Laurence O’Toole  set a new Irish Junior record with a time of 21.29, breaking his own record of 21.31. Lawler had won the 60m a day earlier when the timing system broke down, with both officials and athletes still getting used to the new equipment. Another double winner was  Sligo’s Zak Irwin  with a new championships best of 6.93 secs in the M18 60m  and a solid win in the 200m.
Of the girls, Kilkenny’s Cliodhna Manning  took both W19 60m and 200m titles, while in the W18 400m,  Alanna Lally (GCH)  improved the existing record to 55.87, Lally also won the 800m  by seven seconds.
Tallaght’s Mustafe Nasir won a hard-fought M16 800m, just holding off Michael Foley (Lios Tuathail AC). In the M19 1500, Mullingar’s  Shane Fitzsimons proved a comfortable winner.
Another record came in the W19 long jump when Sarah McCarthy  of Mid Sutton hit the sand at 5.77m

* American-based pole vaulter Brian McGovern broke his own Irish record when he soared over 5.36m at an outdoor meet in Tempe, Arizona. He then attempted 5.46m. His previous best was 5.22m.
