Aviva Leinster Schools Day 2 – Record for Siofra, Double for Harry

Siofra Clerigh Buttner of Colaiste Iosagain ended her Leinster schools athletics career with a new 800m record on the second day of the Aviva Leinster Schools Track and Field Championships in Santry on Saturday.

Cleirigh Buttner’s time of 2 minutes 7.03 seconds broke the previous record by over two seconds and saw her finish over 12 seconds clear of the chasers. Two hours later, she won the 1500m in 4 mins 37.13 secs – less than a second off Sinead Delahunty’s 1989 best. She will end a memorable schools athletics at the All Irelands on May 31.

Harry Purcell of Castleknock College took a stunning victory in the senior boys’ 800m, beating Danny Lawlor ?? on the line and relegating  pre-race favourite Rob Tully of Gormanstown to third place. He then won his specialist 400m despite the worst possible draw in lane 1. In the final race of the day, he helped Castleknock College to relay victory.

At inter level, there was a record-breaking win in the boys’ 400m of 49.49 secs for Blackrock’s Brian Masterson. That broke Brian Gregan’s 2006 time of 50.3.

In the field, Eoin Sheridan of St Finian’s set a new inter boys’ discus record, with his stunning throw of 55.74m adding six metres to Olympian Nick Sweeney’s 32 year old best.

Over the longer distances, schools senior cross-country champion Andrew Coscoran of St Mary’s Drogheda won the senior 1500, while his schoolmate Aaron Hanlon led the 5000m from the start for an emphatic victory. At inter level, Mustafa Nasir of HFCS Rathcoole won both the 800m and 1500m.

On a warm day, Isabel Carron of Skerries CC produced a strong performance to win the inter 3000m, with her time of 10:18.82 just over three seconds off the record. Deirdre Healy from the Institute of Education was out on her own in the senior race.

Overall, Belvedere College won both inter and boys’ overall titles.
