In the men’s race, Paul Pollock finished fith in 66 mins 9 secs, Joe McAllister, ninth in 66 mins 58 secs, Brian Maher 23rd in 69 mins 19 secs and Paul Stephenson 32nd in 70 mins 3 secs. Ailish Malone ran a personal best 79 mins 23 secs. Leading home the 18,000 entry was Andrew Lesuda of Kenya in 64 mins 15 secs.

* John Coghlan raced away with his first ever victory in the St Patrick’s Festival 5km in Dublin – a race that remembers his grandfather Bill Coghlan.

After a no mark in the opening round, Fitzgibbon three 46.03 in the second, and no-marked in the third. Her 49.29m – her best ever season’s opener – came in the fourth and she then threw 48.38 and 48.54 in the final two rounds. Her performance put her sixth of seven in her group. Winner Mariya Abakumova of Russia threw 69.34 in her final round.
* In the USA, Kilkenny hammer thrower Aoife Hickey threw a personal best 57.30m in San Diego.
