A strong team effort saw the Irish team finish sixth at the European Team Championships League 1 in Heraklion, Greece over the weekend – their best ever result.
The team had made a great start to the day when Ben Reynolds finished second in the 100m hurdles behind Konstadinos Douvalidis of Greece. Mark English also took second in the 800m with a time of 1:48.97. Winner in 1:47.97 was Ilham Tanui Ozbilen, the Kenyan who runs for Turkey, and winner of the 1500m a day earlier.
Third places for Kerry O’Flaherty in the 1500m and John Travers in the 3000m boosted the Irish total, along with fourths for Maria McCambridge in the 5000m and Megan Tice in the high jump.
The competition ended with the men’s 4 x 400m, where the Irish team, anchored by Mark English, finished third in 3:05.07. It was enough to beat the Turks by a point and a half for sixth place.
